Getting started for New Users

The Clausthal University Library is a public library open to everyone. A valid library card is required to take full advantage of our services, such as borrowing materials. 

Clausthal University of Technology students:
Your TU-Card also serves as your library card. You will find your user number on the back of the TU-Card. Please have the card activated in person at the Service Desk. There, you will also receive your initial password, which consists of your date of birth in the format DDMMYY.

Language students:
To apply for a library card, please fill out the registration form and bring the following documents to the Service Desk:

  • a valid passport or residence permit
  • a certificate of residence confirming your address in Germany
  • your admission letter from the Clausthal International Center (IZC)
  • Registration with the Computer Center (RZ account; TUC email address)

Library card for guests:
Individuals aged 16 and over should fill out the registration form and bring the following documents to the Service Desk:

  • a valid ID card
  • For persons under 18 years of age, permission from a legal guardian. Declaration of consent
  • One-time fee of 5.00 euros in accordance with the fee schedule of the State of Lower Saxony

Staff:
For employees of Clausthal University of Technology (TU Clausthal), the TUCard serves as the library card. You can find an application form for the TUCard on the TU’s website. Please have your TUCard activated at the Service Desk before your first loan.

User ID and Password:
Your user ID is located on the back of your TUCard or library card under the barcode. Your temporary password is your date of birth (DDMMYY). Please change this when you log in for the first time.

The University Library offers you access to a wide range of print materials in its open-stack and storage collections, as well as to many electronic resources. Using our CLAIM discovery system, you can find out which materials are available at the University Library and in the various departments.

There you will find information about the location, call number, and loan status of the desired item.

Media located in the reading room and in the textbook collection can be taken directly from the shelf and checked out using the self-checkout system. Media from the stacks must be ordered via CLAIM.

You can read e-books, electronic journals, databases, and other electronic documents immediately via the provided link. If you wish to access these resources from outside the campus network, please use the VPN service.

Publications not available in Clausthal can be ordered via interlibrary loan.

Checking Out and Returning Items at the Self-Checkout Kiosk:
Most print materials can be checked out using the self-service kiosk located across from the service desk.

Loan periods and renewals:
The standard loan period is 4 weeks for regular loans and for interlibrary loans from other libraries. For language students, this period is reduced to 14 days. The short-term loan period is 8 days.
Provided that an item you have borrowed is not on hold for another user, you may renew the loan period up to three times.

Overdue fees: A late fee
is charged if the loan period is exceeded.
1st reminder: €2.00 per volume
2nd reminder: €5.00 per volume (plus fees from the 1st reminder)
3rd reminder: €10.00 per volume (plus fees from the 1st and 2nd reminders)

Library Account:
To log in to your user account, use the number on the back of your TUCard. The default password is your date of birth in the format DDMMYY. You should change your password to protect against unauthorized use.

The University Library offers a wide range of options for studying and working. Its various locations provide quiet individual study spaces for personal work and group study spaces for collaborative learning.

Reading Room:
Individual study spaces invite you to study in silence.

Catalog Room:
Here you’ll find group tables for teamwork. Focused studying is possible in our study pods and armchairs. These are quiet, block out acoustic and visual distractions, and offer pleasant lighting conditions as well as power outlets. This creates ideal conditions for concentrated and relaxed work. 

Textbook Collection:
The textbook collection features numerous individual study stations that students enjoy using for focused work.

 

Group study is best suited for our group study rooms or the cafeteria.

Group study rooms:
The group study rooms are ideal if you want to work or study in groups. The rooms are designed for groups of at least three people. You should reserve the appropriate rooms in advance. Your RZ account is required for this. The maximum reservation duration is two hours per day. You can find more information about the group study rooms here.                            

Cafeteria:
In our cafeteria, you can study and work alone or in a group. There is a coffee machine and a free water dispenser. Starting at 4:00 PM and on weekends, the kiosk is open and offers a selection of food and drinks at reasonable prices. 

Studying with Children:
Our Group Study Room 2 is a “Parent-Child Room” equipped with play materials. It is primarily intended for people with children and must be made available to them if needed, even if it has been booked. You can book it here

Printers and scanners/copiers are located at the back of the catalog room near the group study rooms. Printing is done using your IT Center account. You can add funds to your print account at the service desk or online. To print in the library, you must select one of the following printers:

DIN A4 black:  3 cents
DIN A4 color:15 cents
DIN A3 black:  6 cents
DIN A3 color:30 cents

If you do not have a computer center account, you can use our guest PC, which is connected to a printer. The cost at the guest PC is €0.05 for a black-and-white printout and €0.15 for a color printout.

Currently, students and members of Clausthal University can use Wi-Fi in the university library. Instructions for connecting to the Wi-Fi can be found here.

Students and staff from other universities participating in eduroam can also connect to the SSID with the corresponding name.

During orientation week, there are plenty of opportunities for first-year students to get to know the university.

For new students, the University Library offers an escape room where you can explore the library in a fun way. If you’d like to participate, please contact the Bärchenführer so they can schedule an appointment at the Service Desk.
